Shaping sign 200hThe following articles investigate the ability of the Self-Adjusting File to adapt and shape different types of root canals in a minimally-invasive way, while touching as much as possible of the root canal walls.

In a few of the articles, in which the SAF was not portrayed as the preferred choice for treatment, a “ReDent’s note” was added, to suggest how working with the system according to the manufacturer’s directions could help achieve better results.

      The Self-Adjusting File was not used according to protocol - the 2.0mm SAF was used in canals that were prepared to a #20 glidepath, while the SAF 1.5mm should have been used. This is likely to affect the ability of the file to penetrate the narrow areas, touch more of the root canal walls and provide better cleaning during the shaping process.

      The authors seem to ascribe importance to the amount of the removed dentin as a sign to sufficient cleaning and shaping, while they should actually assess the amount of touched dentinal walls as a sign to that. Excessive removal of sound dentin should be avoided, and not encouraged. 

      Reading the "Materials and Methods" section makes it clear that the authors were not familiar with how the Self-Adjusting File should be operated, both in regarding to the required glidepath preparation, as well as the operation of the SAF itself. The SAF should reach working length prior to its operation, which was not the way this experiment was done. This may have led to the results and the misleading conclusions.

      On the positive side, the researchers did note that the Self-Adjusting File preserved more sound dentin.

      On the other hand, the method of work and choice of instrument were not suitable for C-shaped canals. Such canals should not be considered as a single canal, and the use of the SAF in different locations (and not just in one location for 4 miniutes) is advised. Also, in such wide canals, the use of a 2.0mm SAF would be able to touch more of the canal walls in compare to the 1.5mm SAF that was used here.
